Party Scene, 2024, mixed media on board, 55 x 40cm

I started this painting after seeing a very beautiful glove in the window of Sermonta Gloves in Burlington Arcade. I’m going to write more on why they in particular were inspiring but it’s very hot today & this is hurting my intellectual capacities.

I wanted to find a way out of the ‘one object in a void’ type compositions I’ve been doing, through putting this object into a scene and extending it as much as possible. When the initial charcoal drawing hit the edge of the board, I felt like finding a way to continue off it could present an enjoyable challenge. I also like the idea of making art that is difficult to photograph and package and look at.

Sketch from that day vs. detail from finished painting.
